Dawson's Creek and boybands like 'NSync and the Backstreet Boys were popular at about the same time — the late '90s and early '00s. So did James Van Der Beek (Dawson Leery) hang out with dudes like Justin Timberlake? As it turns out, yes. And the story is amazing — James was even the Cool Older Dude!
In an interview with HuffPo Live, James dished on a time he hung out with 'NSync in Las Vegas for New Years Eve 1998 — and, since James was 21 years old, he let a then-underage Justin Timberlake use his ID to get into a club. Justin, now 33, would've been 17 at the time — and bandmate Lance Bass would've been 18.
"I was in Vegas one New Years, and somebody came by and said, ''NSync wants to meet you guys,'" recounts James in the interview. "At the time 'NSync was like the second-tier Backstreet Boys — it was before they had blown up … They had just come out with some Christmas album at the same time 98 Degrees did."
"They were so sweet, and so nice, and they were such cool kids. I immediately liked them," James continues. "And then I remember that night, we were all going to some club, and they were all too young. And so I went in, and then somehow passed my ID back so Justin could get in, with my ID."
Apparently, it worked — but the party was over when they tried to make it work again. "Justin used it to get in, and then tried to pass it on so Lance could get in," James says, "But by the third time they saw a James Van Der Beek ID, they were like, 'I don't think so, James.'"
Dawson's Creek was blowing up at the time, so we're just surprised it worked the first time! As the HuffPo host pointed out, the bouncer must not have followed his WB teen dramas.
