Scott Wilson Talks Hershel in Finale Flashbacks: “It Was a Homecoming” (VIDEO)
Fans of Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) were pleasantly surprised by last Sunday’s Season 4 finale of The Walking Dead thanks to a series of flashback scenes that brought our moral compass back for the night. Comic book writer and executive producer Robert Kirkman previously stated that the Hershel flashbacks were “an attempt to show that this entire season has been one story, and it’s been a story of Rick’s evolution into this new darker version of himself. [We wanted] to go back and show the influence of Hershel and how important that character has been and will continue to be. And to show how far Rick has come, and emphasize what they lost and where they’re going to have to go moving forward.”
AJC.com caught up with Scott after the March 30 Seasin 4 finale aired and the veteran actor was the first to say that his character “went out in grand fashion.” And although some viewers may have been shocked by Hershel’s brutal demise at the hands of The Governor (David Morrissey), Scott admits that his character’s passing didn’t exactly come as a surprise. “Hershel was becoming more proactive, trying to save lives,” Scott said. “It was really a formality when they told me.”
So how did it feel for Scott to return to the show’s set several weeks later to shoot the flashback sequence for season finale? “It was fantastic, it’s a great group of people and it was a homecoming,” he explained.
Despite the flashbacks, it’s important to remember that Hershel is gone, but never forgotten. When asked how important Hershel will be as a legacy to Team Prison going forward, Scott’s response had us getting a little misty. “We’ll find out. He certainly was a searcher of the goodness in people, of humanity and trying to pull humanity out of people. We’ll see if it resonates. I hope it does.”
