Grammy Award-winning singer Toni Braxton will yet again put her acting skills to the test when she stars in the first scripted TV film for OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). The movie, My Name Is Love: The Darlene Love Story, will feature Toni as Darlene in the memoir-turned-biopic.
According to the press release, “This is the dishy and dramatic story of a woman who had it all, lost it all, but never, ever refused to give up.” So what can we expect to see? Well, wild, happening parties at Tom Jones’s house, a very flirtatious Elvis Presley, who made a pass or two at Darlene in the later ‘60s, and a steamy affair between Darlene and singer Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers!
Toni made her big screen debut in 2001’s Kingdom Come alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith, LL Cool J, and Whoopi Goldberg. While the singer came back to the small screen in Lifetime’s made-for-TV movie, Twist of Fate, the role of Darlene Love may be a little different from what Toni’s used to, which is probably what she’s hoping for.
Recently the reality star confessed that she’d love to play a lesbian role on Orange Is the New Black, but we think this new biopic is pretty edgy for our girl Toni — plus, she just might get to sing some of Darlene’s hit records, too!
My Name Is Love: The Darlene Love Story will be executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Darlene Love and is slated to premiere December 2014.
