The Walking Dead Season 4 introduced several characters from the comics — some with the same names from the books, more with different names — and we’re expecting the same from Season 5, which premieres in October.
Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz), Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), and Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) arrived almost exactly as they were in Robert Kirkman’s comics. Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) and Mika (Kyla Kenedy) were a TV version of Ben and Billy. Joe (Jeff Kober) and his group were a new take on The Marauders. Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) is 99 percent different from the guy with the exact same name in the comics. Tara (Alanna Masterson) has some elements of Tara Chalmers, but not many.
The official Walking Dead Twitter account recently held an #AskTWD Q&A and a fan asked, “Which characters from the comics can we expect to see in Season 5?” Showrunner Scott Gimple answered, “I wouldn’t spoil which ones specifically, but more are comin’!” Another fan asked if Negan could be integrated into Season 5. Scott replied, “Negan will be in the show… But we won’t say when…”
*Mild comic book spoilers ahead*
People keep pushing for Negan, but Season 5 is probably still too soon for his story, which starts after Rick Grimes’s (Andrew Lincoln) group gets to the Alexandria Safe-Zone in the books. On TV, we’re about at Issue #64 — after four seasons. Negan doesn’t show up until Issue #100. They could certainly advance his story, but we haven’t even hit the road for Washington, D.C. yet. A lot of fans thought the Season 4 finale “A” might refer to the Safe-Zone, but now it’s looking like Season 5 will cover the road to D.C. Maybe it will end at the Safe-Zone, or hit there along the way.
TV Guide recently asked Robert Kirkman if Season 5 would take place solely at Terminus or if it would visit a variety of places. He answered, “Season 5 will probably have more distinctive individual locations than we've had on the show thus far. There will be a lot of different places we explore in Season 5.” Excellent.
One of those locations may be a TV version of Gabriel Stokes’s church. We may just be reading way too much into the Rick “Savior” poster, but it looks like light is coming in through a stained-glass church window. Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) was “taken” by someone in a car with a cross on the back. Gabriel enters the comic books during The Hunters storyline, which would fit with the Season 5 timeline since it looks like Gareth and company might be a TV remix of Chris and The Hunters. Are any or all of those items related?
What other comic book characters might be joining Season 5? We made a list a while ago, which may or may not pan out. There are several options for new characters, especially if we do get to the Safe-Zone at some point in the second half.
