Zac Efron Replaces Shia LeBeouf in Adaptation of John Grisham’s The Associate

Rumors might be swirling about Zac Efron’s reported relapse, but his career? Totally on fire. Now that Zac’s done starring in Neighbors — the publicity for which has inspired hilarious interviews from co-star Seth Rogen — he’s already secured his next film: the big screen adaptation of John Grisham’s The Associate.

If the movie sounds familiar to you, that’s because it is. In 2008, the movie was set to film with Shia LaBeouf as its star, but now that he’s not famous anymore, the Transformers actor is no longer a viable option. Enter Zac, who’s not only starring in the movie but producing, too.

In the film, Zac plays a Yale grad who’s being blackmailed by a group of criminals. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zac’s character “must take a job at the world’s largest law firm, where he’ll be spying on their work in a dispute between two powerful defense contractors worth billions.”

We love it! It’s about time Zac takes a departure from his more comedic roles in movies like That Awkward Moment for something more serious, where he can show off his dramatic acting chops.

The movie’s still in the early stages, though — producers are still working on attaching a writer to adapt the script.
