On April 7, Team Adam Levine's indie duo Dawn & Hawkes and rocker Kat Perkins belted out a duet to “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall. Both Kat and Dawn & Hawkes were intimidated by each other’s talent. After deciding to go with the KT Tunstall hit, the trio met with mentor Chris Martin to prepare for their battle.
Chris thought that Dawn & Hawkes were great together and just needed to own their style, while he felt that Kat was a natural force. During rehearsals, Adam told Kat to try and tone down her often powerful sound and keep the song pretty simple. Dawn & Hawkes, however, were told to reconnect as a duo and bring back the sensation that Adam first fell in love with. After tweaking the original arrangement a bit, the three were able to find a balance that worked really well for them and made for an interesting battle.
Coach Blake Shelton told the trio that as much as he liked Dawn & Hawkes, he was blown away by Kat and it almost appeared like they were her backup singers. Usher thought that Dawn & Hawkes needed to work on their stage presence because of the energy they have between them, however, despite the “moments” Kat had, she still commanded his attention. Shakira agreed, saying that Kat grabbed her attention even though Dawn & Hawkes sounded like a beautiful couple in love.
When Adam had to critique his contestants, he thought that he hadn’t seen all that Dawn & Hawkes could do, but Kat’s sound and overall performance won him over and he chose to keep her on his team.
