The Season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones featured something very familiar to fans of the show: a sex scene, taking place in a brothel, featuring two women getting naked. With everything else going on in the show, do you feel like we still need the sex and nudity, or have you had enough?
Without question, the show has less sex and nudity than it used to. It’s been a while since two naked prostitutes randomly did things to each other while Littlefinger talked about strategy, but sex is still a part of the show. One could argue that the showrunners, unsure about the appeal of an extremely complicated medieval fantasy on TV, included so much sex in the show’s first few seasons because, well, sex sells. But with the show now among the most popular HBO has ever aired, is it time to get rid of the sex for good and just focus on the greater storyline?
Of course, one could also say the sex scene in the Season 4 premiere wasn’t totally gratuitous. It served the purpose of introducing us to new characters Ellaria Sand and Oberyn Martell and quickly letting us know a number of things about them. One, they’re adventurous, since they’re both bisexual and not interested in “timid” prostitutes. Two, Ellaria is a bastard and proud of it. Three, Oberyn’s insistence on including the male procurer of the establishment shows that he does what he wants, regardless of what anyone else says. And finally, Oberyn’s hatred of the Lannisters drives him more than anything else, even sex, as he has no problem being interrupted from getting busy when it means he can stab a Lannister soldier in the hand; which in turn seems to turn on Ellaria.
Could the show have conveyed all of this in a scene other than what was portrayed on screen? Maybe, but the scene did work.
So what do you think? Should the show ditch sex scenes altogether, or should it use them sparingly to serve the story? Let us know in the comments!
