Started from the bottom, now he's here… hosting the ESPYs!
ESPN announced that Drake will host for the 22nd iteration of its annual award ceremony, which celebrates the past year's worth of sports achievements.
"Drake is an unbelievably talented entertainer who truly has a passion for sports. We are thrilled to have him to host this year's show," enthused ESPN vice president Connor Schell in the network's press release.
The Grammy-winning rapper just wrapped up his third concert tour — entitled "Would You Like a Tour?" — in support of his critically and commercially successful fourth studio album, Nothing Was the Same. And he's celebrating his status as the artist with the most No. 1 tracks on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
But what many fans may not know is that the 27-year-old Canadian started off as an actor on Degrassi: The Next Generation. And he has plenty of experience as emcee — as he was the host and musical guest of an episode of Saturday Night Live this season.
"This is an incredible opportunity for me to combine two of my biggest passions — sports and performing," Drake said of the ESPYs gig.
The ceremony will air live from the Nokia Theater L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on July 16, 2014, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
