The world of The Walking Dead is vast, and the AMC show has only tapped into a small part of it. We know the companion series/spin-off now in the works won’t follow characters from the TV show, but will it follow anyone from the comics?
The books, like the TV show, follow the story of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and all the people they meet in the zombie apocalypse. There are plenty of characters in the comics, written by TV show executive producer Robert Kirkman, that were drastically changed for TV or never showed up at all. There are also people who have yet to show up in the comics that are prompting spin-off crossover speculation.
The Walking Dead comics will soon end the “All Out War” storyline, and it looks like new characters are coming in Issue #127. In the letters column of the newly released Issue #125, RK was asked about speculation that the spin-off might follow the comics’ past or upcoming stories.
“For the TV spin-off, I’m coming up with that stuff,” RK wrote (via Comicbook.com). “It’s unrelated to the comics. What’s happening in issue 127 is in no way connected to the spin-off TV show.”
So even though the new series will be a “companion” show to the main Walking Dead series, it will not be set in Georgia, it will not follow any characters from the TV show, and it will not follow any new or old characters from the books. It sounds like it will only be tied to the mother show via the zombie apocalypse.
Since we don’t even know anything about how the outbreak started (Eugene says he does, but … hmm) they could basically go anywhere with this and call it a companion series. But that’s why “spin-off” is such a misleading term for the show. It’s not being spun from the same TWD web. It’s … it’s whatever it is. Unfortunately, we don’t know too much about it yet, but it’s meant to show up next year. We’re in wait-and-see mode!
