Behold one of the downsides of fame. Minnie Driver, 44, is a celebrity with more than 81,000 followers on Twitter, and fans who seem, for the most part, to be positive and supportive. Being a TV/film star is a great job, when you consider a lot of the alternatives (including having no job), but it does make you a target for ambush-paparazzi shots and snarky responses from anonymous posters.
Minnie was just photographed in a bikini in Miami, with the pics posted in the Daily Mail on April 8. Even though she actually looks great, the shots were apparently attacked by mean-spirited commenters.
"God some people are horrible," Minnie wrote in a tweet that has since been deleted. "You try being photographed when you don't know it's happening, when you're on holiday with your kids."
The About a Boy star added, "I'm out of this Twittersphere for a while. It's too mean sometimes, about your body , about your soul. Not worth it."
She deleted those tweets, but she also hasn't tweeted anything new since April 9. You do need thick skin if you’re going to put yourself in the public eye as a Hollywood star, but no one deserves to be insulted for how they look — especially if they weren’t even posing for pics, they were just trying to have a private moment with family.
Sometimes a full social media detox is just what the life doctor ordered. And when she returns to Twitter … well, there will always be “haters” out there, but maybe she can focus more attention on the positive people. Don’t ignore the good apples for the bad!
