Christina Hendricks' character, Joan, has a son on Mad Men — which launches Season 7, Part I tonight (Sunday, April 13) — but she's not hoping life imitates art.
“We got a puppy, and that’s my idea of starting a family," Christina, 38, told Health magazine (via People). "People say, ‘Oh, that’s practice for parenting,’ but if it’s practice for anything it’s to be a mom to another puppy."
Christina told Health she and husband Geoffrey Arend, 36, "decided that we are not really interested in having children.” Fair enough! There's no law saying everyone has to want kids, but it's always good to welcome more pet parents to take care of little furry babies.
However, the human child question is something that comes up a lot from other people. “It’s just very normal for people to say, ‘Well, when you guys have kids …’" Christina said. "And then when I say, ‘Actually, I don’t think we’re going to do that,’ people will say, ‘Oh, you say that now …’ It doesn’t bother me, though. And, you know, there’s a small chance I could change my mind.”
Maybe she'll also change her mind about how she wants Joan's story to end. The AMC series is ending with a two-part finale, with the second half of Season 7 premiering this time in 2015. For whatever reason, Christina doesn't want a happy ending for Joan.
“As a fan of the show, I want something horribly tragic to happen to her,” she told United Airline’s Rhapsody magazine (via Page Six). “A terrible accident or something, because I think that would be interesting.”
Poor Joan! Hasn't she been through enough? We'd like to veto that suggestion, since Joan is one of the only characters on Mad Men who might actually deserve a happy ending.
What do you think — happy or tragic ending for Joan? And can you relate to Christina's lack of interest in having (human) children?
