GLAAD Media Award Winners: Jennifer Lopez Praises “Cool” Gay Aunt, Laverne Cox Honored
Congratulations to Jennifer Lopez, her show The Fosters, and Orange Is the New Black's Laverne Cox on their GLAAD awards!
The 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards were held Saturday, April 12 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Comedian Ross Mathews hosted, joking about his love for Jennifer Lopez. "Honey, I'm gay but there's always room for J.Lo!" he joked.
Jennifer, who took boyfriend Casper Smart to the event, was honored with the Vanguard Award.
"I've always felt a tremendous love from the LGBT community and the LGBT community has always supported me and returned that love," J.Lo said during her acceptance speech. "Marisa was my cool aunt. She was my mom's older sister and she lived in New York City. I lived in the Bronx and she lived in Manhattan, it was like worlds away! She wanted to be an actress and I always wanted to be like her. Marisa grew up gay in a time when it meant life could be very difficult and that her struggles were mostly kept to herself."
J.Lo also admitted she hesitated before deciding to work on The Fosters, which follows a lesbian couple raising children together. “I asked myself, do I do this or do I not do this. I’m not going to lie to you. Being in the media, being in the public eye is a bitch sometimes and sometimes you don’t feel like getting beat up that day.” But she went for it anyway, and instead of getting beat up, she’s getting honored.
Actress Ellen Page presented Orange Is The New Black's Laverne Cox with the Stephen F. Kolzak award, which is given to an openly LGBT media member who has made a significant difference in promoting equality. “I’m an African-American transgender woman from a working class background raised by a single mother,” Laverne said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “We are not programmed to think we should receive these kind of awards, but I’d like to think that things are changing.”
Lupita Nyong'o, Johnny Galecki, Eric Dane, Rebecca Gayheart, Naomi Campbell, Laverne Cox, Tatiana Maslany and Chaz Bono all attended the L.A. event.
