Joffrey is dead on Game of Thrones, but after the confetti is swept away and the champagne buzz wears off, we’re left with the brutal realization that Jack Gleeson will no longer be entertaining us on our televisions every week. Not only that, but Jack plans on retiring from acting altogether. Ok, we’re going to need some less-celebratory booze now.
Jack is an incredibly talented actor, considering his costars’ insistence that he’s the sweetest human on the planet IRL, and while he’s enjoyed acting, he doesn’t want to make a career out of it. “I’ve been acting since age 8,” Jack tells EW.
“I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to. And now there’s the prospect of doing it for a living, whereas up until now it was always something I did for recreation with my friends, or in the summer for some fun. I enjoyed it. When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It’s not like I hate it, it’s just not what I want to do.”
So what does Jack want to do?
“No idea,” Jack says. “I have one year left in college. After that, I might do a post-graduate of some kind, but I don’t know in what ... I hold a scholarship at my university at the moment. Yeah, I wanted to be an academic when I was 19 or 20. But, I’ve gone off that idea. The lifestyle is kind of lonely and isolated. I don’t think that would suit me.”
So, since he’s not sure what he wants to do, might a return to acting be in Jack’s future? “Not for now,” the former actor says. “When I’m destitute in 10 years time, I’ll accept any script! No. As long as I’m in the not-ungrateful-but-perhaps-happy place where I can say ‘No’ to whatever, I’m going to do that.”
Though we’re definitely going to miss him, we wish Jack the best of luck in whatever he pursues!
