Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Season 5, Episode 18 Is a Throwback to Season 1

Tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries marks the directorial debut of Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore). The actor talked to TV Guide about taking the directorial plunge, as well as the Season 1 throwbacks in Season 5, Episode 18 (“Resident Evil”). Check it out!

Paul admitted that directing has always been something he’s wanted to do — or at least since he saw his first Stanley Kubrick film, which was “a very long time ago.”

“I knew I wanted to direct an episode of The Vampire Diaries from the minute I got one of the lead roles," Paul said. "I just also knew it was presumptuous to ask any sooner than Season 4, so I asked at the beginning of Season 4 and I got to do it in Season 5."

Perhaps, it’s fitting that Paul’s intentions have been there since Season 1 because the episode he directed happens to have a lot in common with TVD’s inaugural season — especially on the Stelena front, as Stefan and Elena are having shared visions of their could-be life together in tonight’s ep.

"I really enjoyed [those scenes] a lot," Paul said "It's always nice to do anything that is different and slows the train down. Season 1 was 20 mph and by the time we got to Season 5, we're flying and it's hard to keep up sometimes. So to slow down and do a throwback to Season 1 was really lovely."

For those Stelena fans looking for some romance out of tonight’s contrived situation, it doesn’t sound too likely. As Stelena’s visions seem to be part of the doppelganger prophecy more than any hidden desires these two have for one another. As Paul puts it: "Because they think it's a prophecy it takes away the romanticism of it like an arranged marriage."

Are you as excited to see Paul’s directorial debut as we are? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
