Jaime Rapes Cersei: Did Game of Thrones Go Too Far? (POLL)
If there was one scene that stood out onGame of ThronesSeason 4 Episode 3 (“The Breaker of Chains”), it was the scene where Jaime rapes Cersei in front of Joffrey’s corpse. But by depicting this disturbing scene, did the show finally go too far?
This scene does exist in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, except in that version Jaime does not rape Cersei. The two have sex in front of their son’s corpse, which is still really messed up, but at least it’s consensual. We’re a little confused as to why the show made this change, since all it really appears to do is regress Jaime’s character back into villain territory. The show has invested a lot of time in getting us to like Jaime and make us forget that he tried to kill a kid in the show’s first episode, which was an impressive feat, but now they appear to have throne that all away by turning the Kingslayer into the Queenraper.
This isn’t the first time the show has ramped up the content from the books to uncomfortable levels. There was also the infamous Red Wedding scene from Season 3, where the show featured Robb Stark’s wife not only being pregnant and present at the wedding (neither of which were the case in the books), but they also made sure to stab her in the womb. A lot of people thought the show went to far with that scene, while others preferred the brutality of it, believing that it better depicted the harsh world in which these characters live. And, of course, we could also go all the way back to the series premiere, where the show turned Drogo and Dany's controversial but at least dubiously consensual first night into clear rape.
What do you think? Did the show go too far with Jaime’s rape of Cersei?
