On April 21, Team Shakira powerhouse country artist Kristen Merlin gave a rousing performance of “Stay” by Sugarland. Shakira chose the song for the Boston singer to show a bit of a vulnerable side to her — something America has yet to see.

Though reserved at first, Kristen was able to take the stage and show a softer side to her sound. Unfortunately, Kristen’s mic went out during her performance, however, she continued on until a stage hand was able to come in and physically replaced her microphone. All four coaches were impressed by Kristen’s showmanship and gave her a standing ovation. Adam Levine thought that Kristen handled the mishap gracefully, proving that she’s definitely an inspiring performer. Blake Shelton told Kristen that what he did hear of her performance was great, and that throughout the competition, she’s making great improvements.

Usher was pleased to see a different aspect of Kristen’s voice, with its soft textures, and controlled yodels. Shakira thought the performance was moving and heartfelt, and felt mesmerized by the sentiment and sincerity of her voice. Shakira told Kristen that she should be so proud of everything she’s accomplished on the show and called her “unbelievable.”
