Scott Gimple and his team have already said that The Walking Dead Season 5 will be more action-packed than many of the episodes of the recent past, and now the showrunner for the AMC hit is saying that there will be a fair amount of laughter thrown in there as well.
Larry King asked Scott to open up about TWD’s fifth season during Scott’s appearance on Larry King Now, and although he was reluctant to give anything significant up (as per usual) he did speak in telling generalizations
“The show, every eight episodes, reinvents itself,” he began, referring to each half of the season. “Like this last half-season we focused on all these different characters. Before that there was a different structure where we had a couple of different big stories crash together.”
So what will the first half of Season 5 bring? “Action. Intensity,” Scott revealed. “There will still be the character stuff there, but the balance is going to be a little different.”
In the back half of Season 4 of course (and in the latter half of the first eight episodes as well) we had many episodes that were focused on just one or two key characters. Those hours were certainly powerful in their own right, but many felt that they lacked the show’s well-known intensity and suspense.
So when Larry asked Scott if there was going to be more action than usual in Season 5, we were pleased by his response. “The story that we’re telling demands it,” he explained. “We’re not going to shy away from character, but the balance will be a little more toward action.”
We’re all for more TWD action, and as Larry continued his line of questioning we even learned that there will also be some laughs and humor along the way. “I want to represent the whole of human experience. I don't want to show just horror and misery, because if you just do that, it doesn't mean anything. You need the light. You need humanity. You need love," Scott said. "You need friendship. Because those are the things that you're trying to maintain amidst these horrors, and when you win, that makes the victories that much more sweet, but when you lose, it makes things much more dark.”
