Watch Jena Irene Sing “So Small” in American Idol 2014 Top 6 — April 23, 2014
We’re almost down to a handful of contestants on Season 13 of American Idol, which means the competition is the fiercest it’s been since we started back in January. Instead of the usual duet performances we’ve been seeing over the last few weeks, the hopefuls will be taking on two songs apiece. It’s sure to be an interesting challenge, as the numbers will be strikingly different from each other: one that’s a little bit country and another that’s rock ‘n’ roll. (Yeah, that was a Donny and Marie reference. Don’t judge us. It’s Idol’s fault.)
Taking the stage for her second song of the night is Jena Irene Asciutto. She blew the judges away earlier in the show with her powerful rendition of “Barracuda,” but now she’s opting for a more emotional feel with Carrie Underwood’s “So Small.” It’s perhaps the most simple and pulled-back we’ve ever seen Jena be, but the judges seem torn on her performance.
“You’re such a good singer,” says Keith. “You’re everything that Idol has always been about. You’re 17 and you sing like that? We watch you get better and better and better each week. It’s the best journey to watch you.”
“This song has so many ornaments, the way Carrie sings it, it’s hard to hear the actual melody,” adds Harry. “So you’re kind of basing your interpretation off of her interpretation. So I disagree. I didn’t really know where you were going. The ornaments you chose to sing didn’t really match what was going on underneath you. The good news is, a lot of people do love you because of your fantastic voice and consistent performances, so in the scheme of things, I don't think it's going to really matter."
