On April 28, Team Usher blues singer Bria Kelly gave a rousing performance of “I’m With You” by Avril Lavigne.

Bria is reeling over the fact that she’s spending her senior year with amazing vocal artists and getting a major music education. Usher brought in his longtime musical director, Natural. Singing such an emotional song is a struggle for Bria, who admits she has trouble with letting her guard down. Her coach and mentor teach her how to use the dynamics of her voice to communicate the vulnerability of the words.

Shakira loved that the song allowed her to challenge herself and that it’s youthful but allows her to show off her vocal skill. Adam Levine, as a huge fan, offered some criticism. He said he didn’t feel she was as connected to this song as she has been in the past, and he wants to see more of the things that made him such a fan of her in the first place in her next performance. Blake Shelton felt like she was a completely different artist tonight than the one we’ve come to know, and while he liked this artist, too, it was certainly different.

Usher agreed it was the type of performance that took Bria out of her comfort zone, but he thinks that’s necessary for her to continue to grow and find new aspects of her voice. “This was an opportunity to introduce something different,” he said, acknowledging that when an artist branches out, there’s always a risk that not everyone will like it.
