Orphan Black : What Do The Proletheans Want With the Clones?
As the second season of Orphan Black starts to unfold, we’re confronted with a lot more questions than answers. Probably biggest among them is this: just who are the real bad guys: The Dyad Institute, or the Proletheans?
In the first season, it seemed pretty clear that Dr. Leekie (Matt Frewer) and the Dyad Institute were the big bads. However, after the past two episodes, they’re starting to look as cuddly as a bunch of Care Bears compared to the Proletheans, whose name is likely an allusion to the Greek story of Prometheus.
Just as the gods were angry with Prometheus for stealing fire, the creators of the clones are not OK with man playing around in God’s sandbox. To right the wrong of either Project LETA or the Neolutionists (we still don’t know who made the clones), these religious zealots have attempted to capture Sarah and have now successfully recaptured her twin, Helena, and brought her to their super creepy farm.
The extremist group was first introduced to the series when we learned about Maggie Chen, the woman whom the late Beth Childs claimed she shot by accident while pursuing a criminal. Something tells us that’s probably not the case, though, given Maggie’s position in an organization set on eliminating Beth and her kind. Season 1 also introduced us to Tomas, who helped Maggie kidnapped Helena and program her to kill her fellow clones.
In Season 2, Episode 2, however, the new leader of the anti-clone cult, Henrik Johanssen, ordered Tomas dead after his insistence that Helena be put down. This seems to affirm that the Proletheans’ objectives may be changing. So what do they want with Helena and her sestry? Your guess is as good as ours.
