Chris Harrison on Telling Andi Dorfman, Producers About Eric Hill’s Death

It’s been a week since Eric Hill passed away in a tragic paragliding accident and Bachelor Nation is still reeling from the loss. He had been in the middle of making a documentary called The Global Odyssey, in which he visited every country in the world recognized by the U.N., but was in Utah at the time of the accident. Meanwhile, Andi Dorfman was filming Hometown Dates with her final four guys. So, did they tell her about the accident?

Show host Chris Harrison talked with ABC News about passing the sad news onto producers and the Bachelorette. "We never would have kept it from them," the star of 27 seasons says of letting them know. "He was a good friend of theirs. Absolutely, they know."

Indeed, the producers issued a statement to E! News about Eric’s passing the day they found out. "We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of our friend, Eric Hill," they told the site. "Eric inspired us every day with his passion, his courage, and his adventurous spirit, and for that we are very thankful. On behalf of our cast, crew, and producers, we send our love, our thoughts, and our prayers to Eric's family during this difficult time."

We don’t yet know how the show will handle the episodes Eric is on, or how they will honor the memory of the man they called their friend, while still telling his story truthfully. "We’re not sure 100 percent of how we’re going to deal with it,” Chris continues. “We're doing our best and we made the best decisions we could at the time. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. We did the best we could trying to be as honorable and decent to the family and to him. It was really something we'd never dealt with before but we did it as delicately and respectfully as we could."

Whether you think his family should be involved in deciding how his coverage plays out or not, it’s likely that the contract Eric signed before going on the show allows producers full control. "Everybody’s very emotional right now and that’s never a good time to make a final decision,” Chris adds. He says it was a great experience for Eric and that he knew him as someone who lived every moment completely.

What do you think of Chris Harrison’s words about Eric Hill? What should they do with his footage?
