On May 5, Team Shakira singer Kristen Merlin gave a rousing performance of “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice. Kristen picked the “tug at your heart strings kinda song” because of the emotional connection she has to the amazing story. The song, which is about a military soldier, reminds Kristen of her father who was also in the armed services and how much she admired the sacrifices he made for his country.

During rehearsals, Shakira decided to give her lone survivor as many tips as possible with hopes of getting Kristen to move forward to the next week.

Hitting the smoke-filled stage not only for herself, but for her coach, Kristen sang the Lee Brice tune with the intensity her coach asked of her.

Blake Shelton told Kristen that she continued to get better week over week, saying that her performance was amazing and touching. He told Kristen that she was definitely a storyteller when she sang and was able to connect on a deeper level with her sound. Usher told the singer “when it’s good, it’s good” and told her that she was on the right track with her truck.

Shakira called Kristen’s performance “moving,” calling it beautiful, and touching enough to make every cell in her body resonate with emotion. She went on to tell her solo singer that she was completely amazed and proud.
