Dancing With The Stars

Meryl and Maks Have No Regrets About Rumba, Aren’t Aiming to Please Judges

Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have been on top of the judges’ leaderboard a few times on Dancing With the Stars Season 18, but they hit the bottom for the first time on Week 8. Their Rumba got a score of 36, including an 8 from guest judge Abby Lee “Sickled Feet” Miller, and their Dance Duel routine got a 34, including two 8s.

Meryl and Maks started the season with Vegas’s top odds to win, and a lot of pressure to get that trophy. After the Week 8 show, AfterBuzz asked if they are still ready to take it all.

“We are at the bottom of the leaderboard, so if that's how you judge then, no, we're not,” Maks said. “But we don't judge like this. We judge according to what we feel. If you asked me to relive this, I would do exactly the same thing. I would need to be told not to, and it would have to be coming from her. If she tells me 'Yo, we need to do what they want to see' then I'll have to sit down and figure out something that the judges want to see."

Meryl nodded, agreeing “wholeheartedly.” She added, "I've been saying all night that I absolutely love our Rumba. It was a special routine, it was one of my favorites for us this season. While it certainly wasn't our highest-scoring dance, like Maks said, I wouldn’t change anything about it, so — except maybe more pointed feet!"

This Monday, for Semifinals American Icons Week, they have Jive and Viennese Waltz. We’ll have to see if they can get themselves off the bottom of the leaderboard — or if it’s too late.

Do you think Maks and Meryl should aim for higher scores or are they right to just focus on what they enjoy and let the judges (and fans) respond as they will?
