The Walking Dead special effects expert and frequent director Greg Nicotero already revealed that he’s really proud of the Season 4 finale and purposefully left the Terminus/cannibals question up in the air, but one thing that he won’t dispute is the reaction he had while watching Melissa McBride (Carol Peletier) in Episode 14: “The Grove”.
For those of you that may need a bit of a refresher, Ep. 14 was the hour during which Melissa’s Carol was tasked with killing Lizzie Samuels (Brighton Sharbino) after the “messed up” kid stabbed her own sister, Mika Samuels (Kyla Kenedy).
Speaking about “The Grove”, Greg tells Zap2it, “I cried when I watched the first cut of that, and I got to the scene with Melissa and I literally paused it and had to call her and say, 'You f—ing made me cry. I'm speechless.’”
"And she's like, 'Well f—, hang up and watch the rest of it and call me,' because she was so excited,” Greg continued. “Then I watched the rest of the episode and I was speechless for like 45 minutes. I couldn't talk. I was just so moved by her performance and what a fantastic script Scott Gimple wrote. She called me back like three hours later, like 'Thanks for calling me back,' and I was like, 'You don't understand.' I couldn't talk."
We’re with you on that one, Greg. Episode 14 was an emotionally draining hour and Melissa nailed it in every respect. We cried too!
Greg also revealed that he knows which episodes he will be directing in Season 5, but he wouldn’t name them just yet. Damn!
Are you surprised that Greg had such an emotional reaction to Melissa’s turn in Episode 14? Weigh in below!
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
