Once Upon a Time Ratings: Season 3 Finale Falls Short of Season 2’s Finish

The two-hour Season 3 finale of Once Upon a TimeSeason 3, Episode 21 (“Snow Drifts”) and Season 3, Episode 22 (“There’s No Place Like Home”) — was a very wacky trip to the Enchanted Forest of the past, wasn’t it? Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) were able to escape the past mostly unscathed, but did the ratings take a beating?

According to Zap2it, the Season 3 closer was watched by 6.5 million viewers and earned a 2.2 rating in the key 18-49 demo. This means last night’s episode was five percent up from last week’s 2.1 rating, but fell 4 percent from the Season 2 finale — which earned a 2.3 — last year. We’re glad the ratings ticked up for the big episode, but are a little bummed it didn’t improve year-over-year.

We suspect more people would have tuned in to the finale had they known there would be a Frozen surprise waiting for them in the final seconds. Just before the lights dimmed on the action-packed episode, a blue substance emerged from a vase Emma and Hook brought back from the past. As the viscous material finally took form, it was revealed that Elsa, the Snow Queen, had made her way to Storybrooke — and she was leaving a trail of ice in her path.

Perhaps the Frozen tie-in will score the show a new horde of viewers next season — we just hope it isn’t a step backwards.
