In the last few moments of the series premiere of Penny Dreadful, Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) was successful in bringing a dead man back to life. As his lab went pitch black during a lightning storm, he discovered that his subject had gotten off the table and was hiding in the corner. We don’t have a name for his creation yet, but we’ll soon get one in Season 1, Episode 2 (“Séance”).
“We should give you a name,” Dr. Frankenstein tells his creation (Alex Price). “You’re a form of new mankind, so perhaps Adam? No. Theological connotations aren’t really us, are they? I know, you shall choose your own name.”
Victor gets up from the table and fetches, continuing, “My mother taught me many things. Among the most useful is one must always have Shakespeare close to hand.”
When he returns to the table, he demonstrates how his creation should choose a name at random. While he flips through the pages, the unnamed man will, at chance, slam his finger down on a single word, thereby choosing his name. After the creature throws his finger down, Victor spins the book around, looking at the name that has been chosen by happenstance: Proteus.
After the doctor repeats the name (clearly from Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona), it looks as though he’s moved by the decision — but that’s not the biggest shocker! The newly-named creature then repeats his new name, proving that he’s more than just a successful science experiment, he’s a living, thinking man.
We can’t wait to see what happens next!
