Things are about to get even creepier on this week’s installment of Penny Dreadful with Season 1, Episode 2 (“Séance”). What goes down in this episode, you ask? Well, just look at the title! That’s right, we’ll be calling upon the dead to grace us with their ghostly selves this Sunday night — and if this sneak peek gives us any indication, we’re not dealing with Casper.
“I ask forbearance. I ask you to suspend your disbelief and imagine your minds floating in the darkness of time,” Madame Kali (Helen McCrory) says, beginning the ceremony. “Let your imaginations be liberate and roam with me back in time to the ancient cities. Back in time to the time before when the spirits walked, when the sun was new, and the old gods walked. I call forth the winter mother goddess. I call to the speakers of the dead, come to me. Come to me.”
OK, so during this spooky chant, you should have noticed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) tightening her grip on the party’s handsome host, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney). Either she’s flirting with him or she’s getting some vibes from beyond the grave. Given the nature of the show, we’ll guess a little of both.
Madame Kali slams her hands on the table, lowering her head. As she begins to speak again, it becomes clear that she’s being used as a megaphone for the dead. “Who…what summoned me?” she asks in a creepy voice. “I speak for the dead, for the undying.”
After a few moments of awkward silence, it seems Madame Kali has broken the hold of the spirits and perks up. “There’s another here,” she says in her normal voice.
The camera shifts to Vanessa’s hands as they begin trembling. As the camera pans up we see that something is wrong and that she has a slightly demonic gaze. Clearly she is possessed — but by whom?
