By now, you’ve probably seen the viral video of the best, most badass cat in the universe saving a little boy from an unprovoked attack by a vicious dog. If not, allow us to illuminate you.
The video was captured by a home security camera and aired on ABC 23 Bakersfield. It shows 4-year-old Jeremy peacefully riding his bike in front of his home in Bakersfield, California, when a neighbor’s dog approaches Jeremy in his own driveway. Suddenly, the dog lunges towards the child, and begins biting and shaking him vigorously.
The video then shows an object hurtling out of nowhere straight toward the dog, and we realize that it’s actually a cat! This frisky family feline, named Tara, manages to not only get the dog off of the boy, but chases it away, making sure it’s gone before returning to Jeremy’s side.
Jeremy’s mother Erica ran to the scene immediately afterwards, and says she was nearby watering plants in the yard when the incident occurred. She said it all happened so fast, she didn’t even realize Tara was involved until her husband showed her the surveillance video.
Jeremy needed a ten stitches, but his parents say he’s doing fine, considering things could have been so much worse if Tara hadn’t rushed to the rescue. The neighbor who owned the dog said they were pulling out of their driveway when the 8-month-old lab mix escaped. Police say the animal will be euthanized.
After the video went viral, the boy’s family and Tara — a stray the family adopted six years ago — were soon saluted on the TODAY show. Although Jeremy slept through the interview, he proudly told the media earlier, “Tara is my hero.” Aww! Who ever said dogs were man’s best friend?
