It’s official: Dancing With the Stars Season 18 misfired with Dance Moms’s Abby Lee Miller as a guest judge.
That’s not exactly a surprise, or breaking news, but two good things may have come out of it: One, which we mentioned before, is that it bonded the pros onto the same side in an otherwise fiercely competitive season; and two, maybe it’s finally convinced The Powers That Be that DWTS is not that kind of show.
Season 18’s Disney Night got rave reviews, and Latin Night got big ratings. That’s a sign of what the DWTS fan base likes. But when Abby was on the show, a lot of people didn’t bother watching, and the ones that did watch had a lot of complaints.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba was just on Access Hollywood and she was asked about the many guest judges of the spring 2014 season. Speaking specifically of Abby Lee Miller, Billy Bush asked, "Was this a hit? Was this a good thing?"
"You know, there's hits and misses, I think, with the guest judges,” Carrie Ann said. “I have to say, I think for everybody, that this was a miss. She's, you know, her persona is her persona. I'm not going to say that's her person, since I don't know who she really is. Some of us are bigger on camera than we are off camera, so I'll give her that. But I think that it was a mismatch for our show.”
Carrie Ann said it's great that the producers tried it, though, since Abby Lee is "a fascinating character." However, she added, "I think that our show is a lot more 'feel-good' than people realize." That night, she thinks they remembered what the core of DWTS was about — trying to do the show with integrity, love, and respect.
So maybe that’s a lesson they’ll take into Season 19, with the new showrunner. More Disney happiness, less negativity and controversy.
Do you hope the fall 2014 season keeps a “feel-good” attitude, or do you like a little pot-stirring to keep everybody talking?
The DWTS Season 18 Finals will air over two nights: Monday, May 19 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. ET and Tuesday, May 20 from 9 to 11 p.m. ET on ABC.
