Pretty Little Liars is known for its crazy twists, and its twin speculation. Though many of the twin theories surrounding twins tend to suggest that Alison DiLaurentis is the one with the doppelgänger, there's a sizable minority that suspects it is actually her mother who has the secret twin. After the events of the Season 4 finale, we're not sure what to believe, but we're willing to entertain any and all possibilities. Does Mrs. D. have a twin? We speculate below!
Yes, that's who she was trying to protect. Whoever clocked Ali over the head the night she decided to fake her death, Mrs. DiLaurentis was willing to protect him or her over seeking justice for Ali's murder. That implies that the perpetrator is someone extremely close to Mrs. D., someone for whom she feels responsible. Though much speculation has been made that the person in question is Jason or Ali's own twin, we think it could be Mrs. D.'s twin. In many ways, this makes more sense than a secret twin of Ali's given that both Ali and Jason seem genuinely perplexed about who might have been responsible for Ali's almost-murder. If there was a secret twin, you'd think she would have made the list of suspects. It has been heavily implied that Mrs. DiLaurentis has some monumental secret and, given her connections to Radley, we wouldn't be surprised if that secret was a person who lives there. And if that person who lives there is Mrs. D.'s own twin.
No, but Ali has a twin. On the other hand, the theory that Ali has a twin definitely holds some weight. Not only is it the explanation given in the book, but there have been multiple clues dropped on Pretty Little Liars concerning the possibility of a DiLaurentis twin. Not to mention Ali's inconsistent behavior in flashbacks. Sure, she could have a personality disorder — or, the Liars were interacting with two different people. If this is the case, this would also explain the lengths to which Mrs. D. would stretch to keep Ali's attacker (and, in her mind, killer) safe from persecution.
No, there are no twins. We tend to speculate a lot about twins because the plot device played such a large role in the book series on which Pretty Little Liars is based, but there's always the possibility that we are making this more complicated than it is. It's very possible that there isn't a whole other character who's traipsing around with the same face as another. But, really, where's the fun in that?
