Glee Season 5 has come and gone, and even though we have no new spoilers about Season 6 to share with you today, May 19, 2014, we should note that it’s a pretty big day in the Glee universe nonetheless.
As you die-hard gleeks may know, the show’s first ever episode debuted five years ago today — on May 19, 2009 — directly after American Idol. The May airing of the pilot marked the show’s soft premiere, and the first season formally kicked off a few months later, on September 9.
Star Kevin McHale (Artie) reflected on the last five years of Glee on social media, Instagramming the above photo along with this heartfelt caption to the show’s fans: “Happy Gleeversary. Wouldn't have gotten this far without all of you Gleeks #5years.”
The accompanying Instagram collage features four photos from the last five years, showcasing a variety of sweet cast shots and behind-the-scenes snaps. In the the picture in the upper right, Kevin celebrates the success of Glee’s music with Matthew Morrison (Mr. Schuester) and Kristin Chenoweth (April Rhodes), and directly below that there’s a shot of some of the show’s crew members.
The left hand side of the college is all about the core cast, with two separate pictures featuring many of the show’s most familiar faces between them. The photo on the bottom left reminds us how young Chris Colfer (Kurt) looked when this whole thing started, and, as many of Kevin’s Instagram followers already noted, the photo in the top left proudly features original cast member Cory Monteith (Finn), who passed away last July.
We can’t believe it’s been five years since Glee first debuted, and we can’t wait to see what Season 6 has in store!
