Talk about needing to be taught a lesson! A kindergarten teacher in Ohio has been suspended and faces termination after she was caught on video allegedly disciplining a student by physically pushing and shaking him.
Today reports that footage of Barb Williams, the teacher, was captured on a surveillance camera at Riverdale Schools. In the video, the woman is shown approaching Ian Nelson as he walks out of the restroom. Williams appears to grab the 6-year-old by the shirt, push him up against the wall, and lift him off the ground, snapping the boy’s neck back violently.
The parents were informed of the incident, but until the boy’s mother, Autumn Nelson, saw the video, she said she had no idea how shocking it was. She tearfully watched it again on the Today for a family interview. During which, Ian explained the incident by grabbing his own shirt and pulling, “She did this to me, hard.”
Not surprisingly, the boy’s parents are outraged and calling for Barb’s resignation. “They should have fired her when they found out about the whole situation, that she put her hands on him,” Autumn told Today. The Nelson’s have retained an attorney, but so far have not taken legal action against the school or Barb personally.
The Riverdale Schools district filed reports with the Hancock County Sheriff’s office, as well as the Ohio Department of Job and Family Resources, and the Department of Education. School officials say they are looking into the incident, and have put Williams — who has been teaching at the school for 14 years — on administrative leave for the next 10 days.
For the remainder of the school year, Ian has been placed in another classroom with another teacher.
