Mark Wahlberg on Fatherhood: “I Don’t Want Them to Be Terrified of Me”
Mark Wahlberg might play a tough guy on the big screen, but he’s a real softie at heart. That’s what the action hero’s latest interview with Esquireshows us, as the 42-year-old father of four talks what it’s like raising a passel of little ones with wife Rhea Durham.
“I think the most important thing is to always be involved in every aspect of their life,” he tells the magazine about parenting. “To give them enough trust that they can share things with you. I don’t want them to be terrified of me, you know?”
Oh, we know! We also know that there is one guy out there who should be terrified of Mark: Harry Styles. The One Direction member is the current celebrity crush of Marky Mark’s two daughters, and he’s a bit jealous.
“I’m like, ‘Well I’m gonna punch Harry in the nose when I see him,’” he told Conan O’Brien about his response to the new object of his daughters’ affection. Ouch!
Thankfully, Mark sounds like he takes a much more touchy-feely approach to raising his own kids, and still marvels at how different their childhoods can be from his own.
“The biggest thing for me is, you know, as quickly as I was able to turn it around, to get from there to here, from me having nothing as a kid to me here now, providing everything for my kids, it’s like, I worry that maybe they won’t appreciate things,” he explains. “I worry that maybe they’ll have a sense of entitlement. You don’t wanna give your kids everything without giving them the tools to be great people.”
Are Mark and Angelina Jolie in the same parenting classes? Because we think they should be required courses!
