First it was Gwyneth Paltrow’s “9 to 5” working moms comment that lead to angry backlash, and just when we thought that Angelina Jolie’s celebrity moms “shouldn’t complain” quote helped matters, Emma Thompson spoke up.
The Saving Mr. Banks actress recently raised a lot of eyebrows with her controversial Daily Mail interview where she talked about her decision to take a year off of work in order to be with her daughter, Gaia Wise, 14.
"A year off was my birthday present to myself," Emma says. "I didn’t actually act or write. I was just a mum. I taught drama at my daughter’s school, cooked meals, and had fun. I highly recommend others to do the same, if they can afford it."
Well, that’s great for Emma, but for other working moms who don’t live on a movie star paycheck, a “year off” isn’t in the cards for them. As if to add insult to injury, Emma added, “You can’t be a great mum and keep working all the time.”
Now, don’t think fellow mommas would let that comment go unanswered! One mother in particular took to Twitter to say, “I resent that. If you aren’t obsessed with housework, prioritize and share chores with your hubby, you can work AND be a great mom,” @vickyderd responded. Amen to that!
