Legendary Poet and Author Maya Angelou Dies at 86 — Celebs React on Twitter (VIDEO)

Today is a sad day to behold. ABC News has confirmed that legendary poet and author Maya Angelou died during the early hours of the morning on Wednesday, May 28. She was 86 years old.

Maya’s literary agent, Helen Brann, said the the civil right’s activist died in her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "She'd been very frail and had heart problems, but she was going strong, finishing a new book," Helen told ABC. "I spoke to her yesterday. She was fine, as she always was. Her spirit was indomitable."

Just a few days ago, Maya, who is best known for her award-winning book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, announced that she would not attend the 2014 MLB Beach Awards Luncheon, where she was to be honored, citing “health reasons.” A month before, she also had to cancel an event in Fayetteville, Arkansas as she was recovering from an “unexpected ailment” that left her hospitalized.

Maya was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis Missouri, under the name Marguerite Annie Johnson. Though her life was plagued with abuse and discrimination, she would push through it all to become a singer, dancer, actress, writer, Hollywood’s first female black director, a three-time Grammy winner, as well as a Tony, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize nominee.

Maya will definitely be missed.
