Don't freak out, Grey's Anatomy fans, but Sandra Oh's (Cristina Yang) on-screen "person" is no longer Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). Her new pretend-soulmate is Kathy Bates — or, at least, it will be in the forthcoming comedy Tammy. (Check out the trailer below.)
We reported back in February that Sandra has a role in the movie, which stars Melissa McCarthy as the titular character who takes a roadtrip with her perpetually-drunk grandmother (played by Susan Sarandon).
Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we know what her role will be: The 42-year-old Grey's vet will play the partner of a character played by Kathy Bates (American Horror Story: Coven), the latter of whom invites Tammy and her grandmother to a Fourth of July cookout along with "150 awesome lesbians."
Tammy director Ben Falcone — who wrote the movie with Melissa, who happens to be his wife — filmed the "raucous" party at a waterfront mansion in Wilmington, NC. And he supplied the extras with grape juice subbing in for wine and iced tea for beer. (So if Sandra's character looks sloshed in the film, that's just a testament to the actress's acting chops!)
Perhaps the virgin drinks explains why Kathy Bates was such a good shot: The script calls for her character to blow up a jet ski with a tiki torch projectile, and the Oscar winner hit the target four times in a row while they filmed the scene.
Sounds like a boozy good time, and we can't wait to see the flick when it hits theaters on July 2!
