It’s a widely known fact that Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy has the rights to stage a Broadway revival of Funny Girl, and given Rachel’s (Lea Michele) fictional turn as Fanny Brice on the most recent season of the FOX show, it seems obvious that Lea would be Ryan’s top choice to take on the role of Fanny in real life.
Still, Lea, who has more than a full plate these days, says following in her idol Barbra Streisand’s footsteps and playing Fanny isn’t a sure thing just yet, although progress has been made.“We’ve had some great meetings about it and we have a great director that we think is going to be amazing and it’s just about finding the right time,” she told Tim Stack on Entertainment Weekly Radio Sirius XM 105 last month. “I really want to tour this record and I’m going to start working on my second album as well. I’m also working on my second book. I’m also working on another animated movie right now, so I have some things going on,” she noted.
Like we said, Lea certainly likes to keep herself busy and already has a full plate (she didn’t even include Glee Season 6 in her litany of upcoming projects!) but it’s clear that Funny Girl and especially the role of Fanny Brice will always hold a special spot in her heart.
“The thing about Funny Girl is that I have to be really vocally, physically ready because it’s going to be a lot of work to do every night so I really want to make sure that I have a lot of strength to do that,” she continued. “But to be on that stage singing those songs every night would be amazing.”
