The Walking Dead Season 5 Deaths: Are The Powers That Be Trying to Fool Us?

*The Walking Dead comic book and Season 5 filming spoilers ahead*

Is someone out there pulling fans’s legs (then eating them, even though they’re tainted meat)?

The Walking Dead Season 5 is now filming, and plenty of rumors are already floating around. One big one hints to a major character’s death. It’s only a rumor, but what if it’s also only a foiler deliberately staged to mislead us? Are we being too paranoid, or not paranoid enough? (They’ll have us in tinfoil hats by July!)

Robert Kirkman recently told Entertainment Weekly, “There’s been a lot more secrecy on set. Just because any images that get out of any kind of things that are seen do in a sense spoil that cliffhanger, so we’re trying to keep things a little more tight this time around. There’s always people crowding around where we’re filming and trying to get spy shots of what we’re doing and stuff, but for the most part we’ve been able to avoid that."

Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and Tyreese (Chad Coleman) help? What happened to Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) and where is she now? Clear photos have been taken of new series regular Seth Gilliam on set, dressed as a priest, which hints to him playing TV’s version of Father Gabriel Stokes from the comics. That seems like a straight-up character reveal, but nothing should be taken for fact.

Right around the time that Seth was seen filming in Griffin, GA with a few other characters who were last seen at Terminus, the rumor came out that a character’s death was filmed. There was thought that it might be Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), with some legit reasoning shared. However, TWD Enthusiasts heard from their own sources that Glenn did not die.

If someone did die, though, maybe The Powers That Be tried to make it seem like it was Glenn to send fans down the wrong path. It’s not like the producers wouldn’t notice by now that filming spoilers have been leaked on a daily basis — mostly by the superfan members at The Spoiling Dead Fans so maybe they’re now trying to redirect the message. Or maybe Glenn did die and they’re now trying to get people questioning whether that’s true. Or maybe no one died.

There’s another rumor floating around that Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) will get Dale’s comic book death. This seems even less tethered to any hard evidence than the Glenn rumor, but while we’re acknowledging things as pure rumor, here's the "Anonymous" note, which was shared on Spoil the Dead and who knows how many other places:

"Okay so cast and crew are trying to get people to be confused on who's dying. They wanted it to be speculated on Daryl, but somehow it got To Glenn. But it's actually neither. Do you remember how Dale died in the comics? Got chased by the hunters and got knocked out, woke up with leg missing and the hunters ate him.. Well yeah after Terminus Gareth and like 4 others turn into the hunters and take revenge on Rick and gang. Just like in the comics... And then the person who replaces Dales death is..... It's Bob... It hasn't been filmed yet and Lawrence doesn't even know yet."

That could be pure BS, especially the part about Lawrence not even knowing yet. Why would this random person — even if they’re in the cast or crew — know before the actor? And why wouldn't the actor know by now when they usually get the showrunner’s death call well in advance?

The rest of it sounds plausible, even if it doesn't turn out to be fact. It’s not exactly hard to get loyal Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) fans worried that he’ll die, then poised to riot. That’s pretty much a life choice for them. And maybe the Gareth (Andrew J. West) revenge thing is legit. They should be filming Episode 3 right around now, and it looks like Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and company might get free of Terminus pretty early on; there have been filming spoilers about a car chase and gunfire and a house in Griffin where filming was recently taking place. And we’ve been wondering if someone might get the comic book Dale treatment this season. Maybe it will be Bob, and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) will have to shoot him like Andrea shot Dale. Or maybe someone else will get the Dale storyline. Or maybe it won’t happen at all.

Rumors can be fun, but only if they are acknowledged as just chatter — speculation about what will happen. Don’t forget how much The Powers That Be want to keep their secrets. They love the fans — even (or especially) the rabid ones who want to know everything the second it happens — but they also work hard to control the message so things are leaked when they want them to be leaked and not beforehand. So they may have their own whispers on the street.

What do you believe so far about Season 5? Anything? Nothing? Everything except a definite answer on who might die?

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
