Are Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes), Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) and company going to keep coming back to shoot The Walking Dead into 2020 and beyond?
TWD premieres every October and Season 5 is showing up later in 2014. The producers have talked about the potential for this show to go on and on, but what about the cast?
According to IndieWire, TWD producer David Alpert talked more about TWD’s future during a recent Produced By panel appearance. He was asked what it was like working from a pre-existing source material, aka Robert Kirkman’s comic books. "I happen to love working from source material, specifically because we have a pretty good idea of what season 10 is gonna be,” David said. “We know where season 11 and 12...we have benchmarks and milestones for those seasons if we're lucky enough to get there."
AMC may be happy to see the show get there, but showrunner Scott Gimple previously warned that the current stars may not be there till the bitter end. “As a comic book, I don’t know if it will end,” Scott told Larry King. “As a TV show, all TV shows end but I will say, I think it’s possible that it could go on, and on, and on. I think it it went ten years, if it went longer than that, it’s possible that the cast — considering the amount of deaths on this cast and everything else — after ten, twelve years it could shift into a whole new cast.”
That might actually fit with the comic book storyline which just introduced a ton of new characters. And Robert Kirkman himself promised that Rick Grimes would not survive the entire run of the book.
Besides, as amazing as TWD is, the current stars may want to stretch into different projects after a while. TWD shoots its 16 episodes from May to November, which is a huge chunk of the year. Sure, Norman, Steven Yeun (Glenn), Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and other stars are booking film and TV projects while they shoot the TV show, but it’s tough. They love this job, but will they love it enough to keep devoting their lives to it five or 10 years from now (if their characters are even meant to live that long)?
Do you still see yourself watching TWD in, say, Season 12? What if the cast was completely different by then? Is there any character whose departure would lead you to stop tuning in?
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
