We know that The Walking Dead is very, very popular with millions of viewers, but we always assumed that the post-apocalyptic drama drew more of a male audience while their female counterparts poured themselves a vat of red wine and checked in with Scandal’s Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington).
However, according to recent TV panel titled “Courting the Female Audience,” TWD is the No. 1 show among women. New York Magazine notes that us gals have a more “demanding and discerning” palette which favors shows like TWD, procedural crime dramas, and reality shows about “real women” dealing with “real issues.”
Another interesting finding to note is that women don’t seem to care if television characters are beautiful. Don't get us wrong, there are some real stunners in the TWD cast but fighting to survive can certainly take a toll on one's appearance, so it’s good to know that ladies don’t need their TV characters to be beautiful.
In addition to being the most popular show among women, TWD was just named one of the top 50 most-watched shows of the 2013-2014 television season. The AMC hit came in at No. 4, with an enviable viewership of 18.3 million. It fell behind The Big Bang Theory (CBS) which had 23.1 million viewers, NCIS (CBS) which scored 22.4 million viewers, and Sunday Night Football (NBC) which brought in 21.7 million sets of eyes but it ranked higher than Sunday Night Football in the coveted 18-49 demo. Looks like a lot of those viewers must be ladies!
We can’t say for certain, but we certainly hope that Season 5 of TWD, which is currently filming, is even more successful than Season 4!
