The Walking Dead

Steven Yeun Narrates World Cup Spot About Lionel Messi (VIDEO)

The Walking Dead may be off the air until October 2014, but there’s a new craze sweeping the nation and it has nothing to do with walkers. We’re talking, of course, about the World Cup, which kicked off last week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In case you’re not big on sports, the World cup occurs every four years and pits the world’s finest soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from) teams against one another until one team/country walks away with the Cup.

You may be wondering what the World Cup has to do with The Walking Dead, but don’t worry, we have a point.

The TWD survivors may not have much time for recreational sports (save for The Governor’s golf practice last season) but that didn’t stop actor Steven Yeun (Glenn Rhee) from narrating a video spot about the 2014 Cup’s star, Lionel Messi.

Lionel is a member of Argentina’s team, and as Steven says, he’s “now known on every continent as perhaps the greatest footballer. Ever.” Steven goes on to list Messi’s various accomplishments, but notes that the attractive athlete has never been on a team that has won the World Cup. “Now, he must bring his mastery of the earthly realms to bare if Argentina is to survive.”

The video sounds like an awesome movie trailer, and even though our allegiance is to the U.S. team, by the end of this clip we were kind of rooting for Argentina to defeat Brazil on their home turf. “On their home soil, he [Messi] is the one to make a great, resilient shot. No outcome would pierce the heart of Brazil deeper than a triumph by this Argentine,” Steven says. “If Messi’s team remains standing when all others have fallen, a man, a lion, will cement his place among soccer’s legends.”Talk about high stakes!
