Real Housewives of Atlanta

Apollo Nida Opens Up About How Growing Up Mixed Race Ruined His Self-Esteem (VIDEO)

With his movie star good looks, high-profile career, and a southern belle like Phaedra Parks on his arm, it seems like Apollo Nida should be a model of confidence, but the Real Housewives of Atlanta star reveals that a tough upbringing took a serious toll on his self-esteem.

“I’ve come from a very impoverished background,” Apollo tells Straight From the A. “My mom OD’d on heroin in front of me. I’ve lived in the streets, I’ve been homeless. I’ve been tossed back and forth between various people. I didn’t start school ‘til the 3rd grade.”

While Apollo’s seriously humble beginnings may come as a shock to some fans, the treatment he received from his own family will make anyone — fan or not — feel for the father of two.

“I come from a very racist background — I’m mixed German and black — and so, the Caucasian, Anglo-European side of my family is very racist,” he explained. “Growing up, you hear the n-word and have low self-esteem, but for me, I’ve always — it’s just like, repellent.”

Yikes! It’s hard to believe that Apollo overcame so much so early in his life — let’s just hope he has similar luck overcoming those pesky charges against him.

Are you surprised to hear how difficult Apollo’s early life was?
