A couple of familiar faces will be smiling back at you from the checkout aisle this week: Dancing With the Stars champion siblings, Julianne Hough and Derek Hough, are on the new cover of People magazine.
The cover, as you can see, references their "Crazy Childhood" when they left home to become stars. Fans of the pros are already familiar with the story — when Julianne, now 25, was 10 and Derek was 13, they left their siblings and divorcing parents in Utah to study at the London dance school Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. They lived with Shirley and Corky Ballas, parents of Mark Ballas, who is still a DWTS pro and Derek's BFF for life.
But it was a tough transition for the young Houghs, as you can imagine. "I remember one of my first days there I got off at the wrong train station," Julianne told People. "I was just standing there thinking, 'Where am I?'"
The dance world is filled with pressure, and Julianne seems to have some regrets about trying to look and act older to fit in. "When I look back, I think it’s so sad I have no pictures of me with a cute, bare, 10-year-old face."
But that tough time led them to where they are now — and where they are now is on tour together. Tonight (June 18), Derek and Julianne perform in Nashville, then head to Upper Darby, Pennsylvania and New York City. Check out more of their Move Live on Tour here.
And pick up the new issue of People, which comes out Friday, to hear more from the Houghs and see pics of them growing up. Nothing could be cuter than this one of baby superstud Derek!
DWTS Season 19 premieres this fall on ABC.
