“The four of you have had a very stressful week,” Mr. Hackett tells the four Liars as they sit in his office, looking the picture of courteousness. “I want you to know how legitimately relieved we all are that you’re safe and what it means to have you back in the halls of Rosewood High School.”
Emily is the first of the Liars to deliver a comforting if not unenthusiastic platitude: “We’re happy to be back,” she tells Hackett. He continues by telling them that things are not going to be the same as they were before — at least in the short term. Spencer says the Liars understand, but what she’s probably really thinking is “duh.”
“As I told your parents, the school will protect you from the press and the curious,” Hackett says. “But there are limits to what we can do with these unusual circumstances. I need to know that you will do your part to keep the disruptions to a minimum.”
Hanna speaks for all of the Liars: “You won’t even know that we’re here.” We give them until lunchtime.
