Sure, Spoby is doing well right now, but don’t think we didn’t notice how tense Spencer (Troian Bellisario) got when she had to repeat Ali’s web of lies to Toby (Keegan Allen) in the latest episode of Pretty Little Liars. With Ali back in town and potentially up to her old, manipulative ways, will her lies be the thing that tears Spoby apart? We speculate below.
Yes, Spencer has lied to Toby one time too many. We’re really worried about this latest lie bringing an end to Spoby’s relationship (for now), especially if it turns out the “A” game is related to Toby’s mother’s death, as we assume it may be. As Toby continues to search for the truth — both in his relationship with Spencer and in the mystery of what happened to his mother (we don’t believe he’ll really stop looking) — it is going to become more and more imperative that Spencer not keep things from him. And we’re not sure Spencer will make that choice. She kind of, sort of has a history of not telling the truth. Though we’re totally looking forward to the eventual Pretty Little Liars spin-off: Pretty Little Truth-tellers, telling the story of the “Liars” in their more mature years.
No, Spencer will tell Toby the truth. This, of course, would be the ideal solution: if Spencer just told Toby everything. With everything he’s done for the Liars in the past, this seems the way to go. He can’t be a Liars’ resource if he doesn’t know what the heck is going on. Plus, he knows enough of the truth that he will probably figure it out eventually anyway. We think this is somewhat likely given that, of all the Liars, Spencer is the one who seems the most fed up with Ali’s lies. She is also the one who has a history of standing up to Ali. We think Spencer may eventually choose Toby over Alison, and tell Toby the truth about everything that went down in New York.
No, because Spoby can survive anything. Of course, it is more complicated than Toby vs. Ali. If Spencer tells Toby the truth, she is not only implicating him in a crime, but also putting the other Liars in more danger. And, when she frames it like that, we think Toby might understand. As much as we are for truth as a cornerstone for any successful relationship, this is the TV world and Toby is head-over-heels for Spencer. Heck, he flew to London just to try to look her sister in the eye and get the truth about the “A” game. Though we think Spencer’s latest lie for Ali will be a roadblock in Spoby’s love story, we don’t think it will be the end of it.
