A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office told New Jersey’s Star-Ledger the delay was “100 percent not” because Joe’s father, Frank, died unexpectedly on June 18. The rep said an administrative issue prompted the move, and nothing else. (Justice is rarely swift in our court system!)
Joe and Teresa pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges back in March. Joe faces 37 to 46 months in prison, while Teresa — who faces less time — is trying to get just probation. (Joe and Teresa have four daughters, age 13 and under, and the parents wants Teresa to be able to be there for the girls.) Joe could also be deported after serving jail time, since he was born in Italy and moved to the United States at age 1, but apparently never became a U.S. citizen.
Joe still has to return to court in July in Paterson, N.J. to face state charges of driver’s license fraud (a different case entirely).
Still, it has to be a little bit of a relief for the family to know they have some extra time before the big federal sentencing. RHONJ Season 6 premieres July 13, and the Giudices’ legal woes will be a focus. The show was taped months ago, but the premiere was going to be after the sentencing. This pushes the sentencing back to two months after the show’s premiere (unless the sentencing is delayed again).
What do you think of this delay? Do you wish the justice system moved its butt a little faster, or are you glad that the family has some (temporary) relief?
