Ryan Murphy Receives Louis XIII Genius Award: Watch His Funny Speech! (VIDEO)
Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy received the Louis XIII Genius Award at the Critics Choice Television Awards last night, June 19, and he gave a speech that pretty much describes him to a T. Part funny, part self-deprecating, and every bit heartfelt, Ryan brought the audience to their feet before he even hit the stage.
Introduced by friend and The Normal Heart star Jim Parsons, Ryan started by reading some hate tweets he came across when it was announced he’d be taking home this award. Reciting one such tweet, he read, “So Murphy is being called a genius by some critics group. I no longer want to live. What’s next, is Jessica Simpson winning a spelling bee?”
Ryan went on to say he actually agrees with said haters and doesn’t see himself as a genius, but noted he’s had the honor of working with several “geniuses” throughout his storied career. He listed several actors from The Normal Heart and American Horror Story (we’ll forgive the omission of Glee actors since they're so young and have decades left to prove themselves) and stated that he is “so grateful and thankful for them.”
And while he may not be comfortable being called a genius, Ryan did reveal his one “genius” piece of advice: “Surround yourself with people who are more talented than you, and then take all the credit.” Those words of wisdom got a laugh from the audience, though Ryan clarified that he does in fact give credit to others when and where it is due.
