Dancing With The Stars

Val Chmerkovskiy Defends Zendaya As Best Choice to Play Aaliyah

It's been a year since Shake It Up alum Zendaya and Dancing With the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy formed the superpower Valdaya and took second on DWTS Season 16. The two had a hipster cool brother/sister relationship that has not slowed down a beat since spring 2013.

Zendaya is part of Val, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Tony Dovolani's SWAY show next month, and she tweeted support for Val's bro Maks when he was criticized during Season 18. Now Val is tweeting his support for Zendaya, as she faces criticism for taking the role of Aaliyah in Lifetime's planned biopic. Some fans are upset at the casting of Z, while others are upset because the late star's family is opposed to the Lifetime movie.

Zendaya has shared her own feelings on being part of the project, but Val jumped in with his thoughts in this series of tweets on June 18:

• "Haters are always going to hate, but talent and work ethic will always prevail. Stay focused on your craft and give em some more to hate on."

• "There's no one better for the part. Point blank. Period."

• "She's on a different level. Figuratively... and literally."

• "So whoever is writing all this bulls**t save the cyber ink and make yourself useful. somehow. Work hard and deserve yourself the pleasure. ... of watching my girl in a role of a lifetime. no pun intended."

Nice! We hate seeing Z under fire, but at least she knows Val — and her DWTS family — will always have her back. We already know Z is a triple-threat superstar with maturity and wisdom beyond her years (she proved it when weathering DWTS "ringer" criticism at age 16), and she'll celebrate Aaliyah's legacy with respect. Stay positive!
