What Does Don Johnson Think of His Daughter, Dakota, Starring in Fifty Shades of Grey?

When news broke back in 2013 that Dakota Johnson was casted as Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of E L James’s novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, not only were fans ecstatic, but so was Dakota’s family — especially her mom, Melanie Griffith.

Just hours after E L James confirmed the news, the proud momma gushed about her daughter’s new role to her Twitter fans. “My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!!,” she tweeted. “Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmomma.”

Since then, Dakota has been busy filming the hotly-anticipated film opposite of Once Upon a Time alum Jamie Dornan, who plays the one and only Christian Grey. But what does Dakota’s dad, famed Miami Vice actor Don Johnson, think about her risky new role?

"This is the family business," the 64-year-old actor tells Good Morning Britain (via Us Weekly) during a promotional tour for his new film, Cold in July. “This is what we do, and I am absolutely certain that Dakota will take a piece of material and a character which a lot of people might imagine could be inappropriate in some ways and turn it into something spectacular."

That “inappropriate” material Don is referring to is — you guessed it — the S&M relationship between Ana and Mr. Grey, which has put the film between an R and NC-17 rating.

"Speaking like a proud father and a seasoned professional, I can tell you that she is a gifted, gifted actress and this will just be one part in a long line of tremendous performances in her career," Don added.

So, given how proud dad is of Dakota, will he be buying a ticket to catch her in the sexually-charged film? "I probably will not see it just because it’s not a movie I would see," Don explains. "I’ve never seen The Vampire Diaries, I’ve never seen Twilight. It’s in a category of films that I just wouldn’t be interested in." Fair enough!
