In the books, Myrcella remains in Dorne, where she is betrothed to Trystane Martell, the son of Oberyn's older brother, Prince Doran Martell.
Myrcella’s main plotline in the books involved a failed attempt by Doran’s eldest daughter, Arianne, to crown Myrcella queen. In Dornish law, lands and titles are passed down to the eldest heir regardless of gender, so according to Dornish law Myrcella should be queen over Tommen. Arianne’s reason for crowning Myrcella is that she is angry about her uncle Oberyn’s death, and hopes to start a war with the Lannisters.
However, Arianne is thwarted in her attempt by Doran’s captain of the guard, Areo Hotah, who kills Arianne’s lover, Arys Oakheart (who also happens to be a member of the King’s Guard) before they can crown Myrcella. Another member of Arianne’s party, Darkstar, attempts to kill Myrcella and manages to slice off her ear before escaping.
Since we’ve heard nothing of casting for Oakheart, Darkstar, or even Arianne, it’s entirely possible, and even likely, that the show will completely change Myrcella’s storyline. The rumor is that a romantic storyline will be introduced between Myrcella and Trystane, which does not exist in the books. There are also rumors that Jaime might be headed to Dorne in Season 5, which does not happen in the books, so that could also send things in a totally different direction. We’ll have to wait until Season 5 to find out!
